Since air has an attenuating effect on ultrasound, PVA uses de-ionized water as a coupling medium. Liquids of any type are low-attenuation for ultrasound. It can thereby be ensured that the highest possible frequency of sound can penetrate the object to be investigated and thus produce the best possible results.
